On March 1, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society kicked off the 2016 Active Duty Fund Drive with a goal in mind. Their mission was to raise a total amount that was 25 percent more than 2015’s NMCRS drive raised. When the event concluded on March 31, NMCRS employees and unit representatives were excited to report they not only met their goal but exceeded it.

According to Gunnery Sgt. Rubin LeCount, passenger travel chief and unit representative for the fund drive, this drive is important for two reasons: to raise awareness of this program and to raise money in order to support those in need.

“NMCRS not only supports service members financially, they also provide counseling, educational assistance, and other various programs,” said LeCount.

The primary objective of NMCRS is to provide assistance and aid to active-duty Marines, sailors, eligible family members, widows and survivors. This aid or assistance may come in the form of a quick loan, disaster relief, emergency travel funds, or educational support. It also provides support and counseling for financial planning, budgeting, education and combat survivors.

The 2015 fund drive raised approximately $18,000, with $4,000 being donated by Marine Forces Command personnel. This year’s goal was to raise at least $25,000. Due to the generous contributions given by Marines, sailors and civilians, this year’s fund drive raised approximately $40,000.

“This year’s fund drive was a huge success and I would like to thank all the [Marines, sailors and civilians] in the Hampton Roads area for their donations and support,” said LeCount.
