Petty Officer 3rd Class Thomas McCarthy prepares to place an IV for Cpl. Recruits were instructed to move quickly during the course to simulate maneuvering around dangerous environments during combat situations. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 22.

The tents provided Marines with shelter from the unforgiving Mt. Fuji chill as they rested between training events.
