During the ceremony, Sgt. Maj. Michael J. Prichard, left, was formally relieved of his post as Command Sergeant Major by Cavanaugh, who then appointed Sgt. Maj. Aaron G. McDonald, center right, through a symbolic transfer of the non-commissioned officer sword. The U.S. Marine Corps Command Sgt. Maj. role serves as the principal enlisted advisor for a senior Marine commander, making high level strategic decisions that impact the entire Marine Corps.
