U.S. Marine Corps SSgt. William D. Bordelon was born on Feb. 25, 1920, and served as a combat engineer with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. During the Battle of Tarawa in World War II, Bordelon was killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943, while leading his Marines towards enemy defenses under heavy fire. He was posthumously awarded with the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary courage and dedication. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. Frank Sepulveda Torres)
