Master Chief Jeffrey A. Covington

Command Master Chief (EXW) Jeffrey A. Covington is a native of St. Louis, Mo. He enlisted in the Navy’s Delayed Entry Program in July 1979 and reported for boot camp in November 1979. He completed Recruit Training and Hull Maintenance Technician “A” School in San Diego, Calif., and attended numerous advanced Hull Technician “C” schools.

His duty assignments include: USS Vulcan (AR-5) Norfolk, Va.; Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity Charleston, S.C.; Submarine Base Pearl Harbor Det. 618, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 112, St. Louis, Mo.; Naval Inshore Undersea Warfare Group II, Williamsburg, Va.; and Naval Coastal Warfare Group One Mobile Training Team (NCWG-1 MTT), San Diego, Calif. Master Chief Covington was selected for the Command Master Chief program in March 2004 and reported as the Command Master Chief (CMDCM) of NCWG-1, San Diego, Calif., where he served until October 2005. He also completed successful tours as the CMDCM at Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron 30 from 2006-2007; U.S. Naval Forces Iraq from 2007-2008; U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/ 5TH FLEET from 2008-2010; Riverine Group One from 2010-2012 and as the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command Force Master Chief from June 2012 to November 2014; Joint Task Force Civil Support Command Senior Enlisted Leader Nov 2014-Oct 2017; and as the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Fort Story Command Master Chief November 2017 – July 2019.

During his tours, Master Chief Covington has numerous deployments to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR) in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Desert Fox, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom I & II, Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. He also deployed as the Inshore Undersea Warfare Liaison Officer to the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division for Operation Uphold Democracy in Port Au Prince, Haiti, in addition to numerous fleet exercises across the globe.

Master Chief Covington is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA NRC Pilot Class), the Command Master Chief/Chief of Boat course 10-060, the Naval Post Graduate School Navy Senior Leader Seminar 2014, the National Defense University Keystone Senior Enlisted Leadership course, the U.S. Army Chemical School as a Disaster Preparedness Operation Specialist, and the Joint Special Operations University Special Operations Senior Enlisted Course. He also successfully completed Survival Evasion Resistance Escape (SERE Class 06-200) training at Warner Springs.

Master Chief Covington’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Expert Rifle, Expert Pistol and numerous unit and campaign awards. He is qualified as an Expeditionary Warfare Specialist.
