Mr. Joseph W. Murphy joined U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command (MARFORCOM) as Executive Director in May 2018. MARFORCOM commands active component service-retained operating forces, executes force generation in provisioning joint capable Marine Corps Forces, and directs deployment planning and execution of service retained operating forces in support of Combatant Commander and service requirements.
Since his selection to the Senior Executive Service in 2004, Mr. Murphy has served in various SES positions at U.S. Fleet Forces Command, including capabilities and resources integration; fleet readiness and training; and fleet installation and environmental readiness. Mr. Murphy was Executive Director of Navy Warfare Development Command from 2015 to 2018. During this time, Navy Warfare Development Command was focused on creating new and innovative concepts, doctrine, war games, and experimentation to improve Navy's warfighting capability.
Prior to entering the Senior Executive Service, Mr. Murphy was a career Naval Officer. He served at sea in USS Iwo Jima (LPH 2), USS Ticonderoga (CG 47), USS Chosin (CG 65), and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51). He commanded USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) and Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Eight. Ashore, Mr. Murphy served as an Appropriations Committee Liaison on the Staff of the Secretary of the Navy. He was Deputy Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations; Requirements Chief at U.S. Joint Forces Command; and Requirements Chief at U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
Mr. Murphy graduated from the United States Naval Academy and subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in financial management from the Naval Postgraduate School.
